How to connect my desktop to a router that is 100 meters away?

I have a desktop pc upstairs and a desktop downstairs. The downstairs is connected to a wireless sky router. The upstairs one is connect using a wireless usb adapter but this takes about 10 minutes to connect. I want to have a wired connection upstairs to the router downstairs. Any suggestions on how to do this are greatly appreciated. How to connect my desktop to a router that is 100 meters away?
use powerline adapters

- these use mains wiring instead of a long ethernet cable. You plug a powerline adapter into one of the ethernet ports on the router and into a local mains socket and another adapter into your computer ethernet port and a nearby mains socket

Speeds are better than wifi and signals can be encrypted so your neighbour cannot hack in if they have powerline adapters.

They work best if they are directly plugged into a wall socket on their own rather than on an extension cable.

You are going to need to use a wired connection as the max range for even the new 802.11n routers are about 70 meters,

You might need to have someone drill a hole up to the upstairs and put the ethernet cable to be wired up through there.
100mts or 330 ft you live in a big house man
another thing you are going to have to consider is the fact that ethernet cables can only work under approximately 100 meters

  • How do I log into my wireless router if I forgot the password?

Im trying to make my internet secure, and to do that I need to log into my trendnet router. I changed the password from the default, I think. How can I get back into the router? I already tried resetting it.....Thanks for the help! How do I log into my wireless router if I forgot the password?
Teh default username and password is usually admin. So that would be admin for the username and for the password. If that doesnt work you need to reset your router by holding the reset button on the back of it. This will wipe out all settings on the router and they will need to be setup again. If you need help call the manufacturer of the router. How do I log into my wireless router if I forgot the password?

what program are you running? that seems odd

you can do a google search for software that will mask your IP, you can try changing it to 192.168.1.100 or something similar and it *may* trick the software, but doubt it.How to hide my computers direct connection to the internet without a router?
you can change your IP address to 192.168.1.100 - and it will think its behind a router (presumably). Do this will prevent you from getting on the internet, so you'll have to change it when you want to surf.

Or you can buy a router and plug your internet connection into it and then plug your PC into it.

Tell us the software and we might know ways to fix it.
Getting a router is your best bet, you can also try using Zone Alarm firewall, this is a software only firewall so this may not help but you can try it
Your router moves one bit of info to another internet transporter before launching the signal.

You must have a router because its the only item that contains a data transporter.

This is the easiest i can explain it.

The name/type of software would really help, but I'm guessing what is probably happening is that you have cable Internet. Some/most of Cable Internet providers' modems hand out a public IP address to your PC in order to enable it to access the Internet. I'm guessing the software you're using, needs your PC to have a private IP address 192.168.xxx.xxx. DSL does this, but it's probably easier to buy/install a router, rather than switch ISP's. But again, the name/type of software would really help shed some light on this...
There are two general types of IP addresses, public and private.

Public IP addresses are addresses predefined as public and these are ';routeable'; meaning that routers will transfer them upstream to other routers and get them to their ultimate location. Remember the internet is a maize of routers and connections so if an IP is Public it is routeable and out it goes.

Private IP addresses are not routeable. Routers will NOT transfer that IP address upstream. In fact, they will transfer that IP to the router's public WAN IP address (called Network Address Translation or NAT) and send it out if it needs to go out.

Private IP addresses include the commonly seen 192.168.x.y format (where x and y both range from 0 - 255) as well as other Private IP addresses.

When you connect a pc to a network that has a router or other DHCP server, the pc is given a private non-routeable IP address when the pc's LAN port is set to obtain an IP automatically.

When you connect a pc to a modem (DSL or Cable TV, or any other dynamic public IP address ethernet device), and the pc LAN port is set to obtain an IP address automatically, it will receive the dynamic IP from the ISP. This is a public, routeable IP address.

Apparently you have only 1 pc at your location. Also, I suspect you need to get to the Internet with this software or it would not be so concerned about the public IP and the lack of a router. If you had 2 or more pcs you could set up Internet Connection Sharing. This is a lot of work (you need a second Network Card, separate IP subnets, a fair amount of configuration, etc) and a router is probably easier to use.

You may want to carefully examine your software and see if you can change the set up to permit you to use it with an Internet connection that provides a dynamic IP address. There may be an option but I suspect not.

How do I set up a wireless router if I have a modem that is connected to a desktop?

I just brought a Dynex router today and I never set up a router before. Can someone please help me?? Please give me stey-by-step instructions! Thank you!How do I set up a wireless router if I have a modem that is connected to a desktop?
I am assuming the modem to which you refer is either DSL, cable or FIOS.

    Power off everything. Then:

    1) Connect the router to the modem. The Ethernet cable that comes out of the modem should be connected to the router's ';WAN'; port.

    2) Connect another Ethernet cable to the router from your computer.

    3) Start the modem. Start the router. Start the computer.

    4) At this point, if you're extremely lucky, you won't need to do anything else. But, chances are you will.

    5) Open your computer's network properties. Set the IP address to a number in the router's network address range (you'll have to check your manual, but most likely that will be 192.168.1.1). For example, 192.168.1.2. Set a subnet mask (255.255.255.0) and a gateway address to that of your router.

    6) Open a browser and enter the router's address. If all goes well, you'll see the router's configuration page.

    7) If your router has wireless, add wireless security (WPA is better than WEP, but WEP is better than nothing). Make your router a DHCP server.

    8) Set your computer's wireless network to DHCP client, automatic DNS and the gateway to the router.

Restart, and you should be ready to go.

For additional support, check the Dynex support site.

How do I access the computer that is connected to my wireless router through my laptop?

I have a wireless router. The wireless router is connected to my DSL modem and my desktop home PC. My desktop is connected to the router physically with an ethernet cable and accesses the internet as such.

My question is, how or can I access my desktop PC to go through files, etc, via my laptop? How do I access the computer that is connected to my wireless router through my laptop?
What you do is Share folders. Go to the PC and right click the folder you want to share (I Normally share Drive C: but if you don't have a sequrity key on the router its not recomened. right click on it the click ';proerties'; then the sharing tab on the display box. click the apporite bothen click ok.

Now go to the laptop then find My Network Places its usually in the Start menu and could be on the desktop. there you will see a folder lke this ';K: on \\PC'; Where K is the folder and \\PC is the name of the pc.How do I access the computer that is connected to my wireless router through my laptop?
Just enable file sharing in both systems. You will be then able to access files in the other system.

Does a wireless router need to be connected to a wired router?

I'm trying to get the optimum internet setup in my home and I just don't know how to. At the moment I have a fairly rubbish wired router connected to a fairly rubbish wireless router. I'm getting a new wireless router soon, so do I also need to change the wired router to get the best out of the wireless router? Or can I just have the wireless router?Does a wireless router need to be connected to a wired router?
Just the wireless router. A wireless router also has wired ports.Does a wireless router need to be connected to a wired router?
No. The wireless router stands on it's own. You may have bought a device that is just a wireless access point and not a wireless access point and a router. Then you will need a router if you want to share the Internet with multiple computers.

Instead of getting a new router, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9KWdOLgy

    NewEgg.com sells these.

Unless you have a good reason to get a new router, don't get one. If you do online gaming where you need to prioritize traffic, then you might want to get a gaming router. If you're just a regular Internet user, then don't get a new router. Watch that video instead.
Your modem has only one plug, which should be going directly to a single router. Most (?) wireless routers also have places for wired PC's to connect to, and of course antenna(s) to deal with the wifi-enabled computers. I wouldn't recommend connecting one router into another. All you should need is one - and the modem itself.
No, Just remove everything you have and connect the new wireless router directly to the ISPs Modem.

    ~

Don't confuse a Modem for a router. You need a modem. It provides the Internet signal from your ISP.
how it works is that your ISP would usually send you a modem or have you buy one.

Connect the modem to a phone jack, then your wireless router would be connected to the modem

You will be able to split or divide the connection coming from your router using a hub/switch.

Hubs are just amplifiers(repeaters) which perform the splitting function, It is better to use a Switch instead of hub because they are intelligent and efficient than Hubs.

You can get a switch with 8 ports and connect up to 7 computers to the switch and 1 to the router

    Internet-----%26gt;Modem------%26gt;Router---

--%26gt;Switch/Hub------%26gt;ComputersHow can i split one Ethernet cable off a router connected to a modem?
Ok... lets go over this step by step.

You have a modem, connected to a cable or DSL connection.

There's an ethernet cable going from your modem to a router, connecting to it's uplink port.

Your router has one other port, where your existing computer is connected.

There is a good chance that there is another plug, beside the one where your computer is connected, that you can use for another active connection.

If there isn't a second connection on your router, you have to decide between getting a new router or an ethernet switch, which would plug in between your existing computer and the router.

There's a good chance that a new router would cost less than a switch, and it's also more likely that the least expensive router would be wireless as well. Most wireless routers can have the wireless feature turned off if you don't want it, so there's no need to pay more for a wired-only router.

The one other thing that sounds like a possibility in your case is that you want to share the one ethernet cable with a second machine in the same room, and while your current router has more open ports, you don't want to run a second cable from your existing router. For that, you would use an ethernet switch, which usually has 5, 8, 15, or more ports. Connect it to the existing cable, then plug your two machines in to any of the remaining ports.
You can't. One cable -- one computer. There's nothing in a simple splice that would prevent collisions between messages from the two computers.

But I think it is possible to connect another router and have multiple computers attached to it. Routers are way smarter than physical splices.

Unfortunately, I've never done it so I can't give you advice as to how to set up the routers.

    Hope that helps.

How do I find the password to my wireless router?

My dad changed the password to the wireless router, and lost the paper where he wrote down the password. So the password isn't the default one that comes with the router, and we can't connect to the internet now without plugging our computers directly into the router. I'll basically do anything to get the password. :) Help? How do I find the password to my wireless router?
Is there a computer that is connected to the wireless network? Your dad's maybe?

If so, on that computer download and install a program called ';WirelessKeyView';. It will list all of the networks that computer has connected to and their respective passwords. I've used it myself, and it works like a charm.

Simply download it, and run the file. Your antivirus may give you a warning and you might have to disable it, but it's a false alert.

If you're running windows 7, you have to hit file, advanced options, and use code injection method. How do I find the password to my wireless router?
You'll need to reset the router to factory defaults and then reconfigure it. Hold the reset button for about 5 seconds and it will go back to default.

But - if you can't connect over WiFi but you can connect over Ethernet, it sounds like you're saying you lost your encryption key, which is different than your router password, and can be altered by logging into the router (from the wired connection). If that's the case, be sure which password you're looking for.

While plugged into the router, open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG and press Enter. Now open a browswer and go to ';http://'; followed by the address labeled as Default Gateway. Try to log in their using the default id and password (check manufacturer's site). If you get logged in, you can click on Wireless and view or change your WiFi passphrase/key.
first your going to need internet, so hook up the computer you are going to be using to the router

if you have a windows: on your start menu, search ';cmd'; no quotes. type ';ipconfig'; and hit enter.no quotes again. your ip address should be the first full set of numbers for example, 192.168.1.103

if you have a mac: go to system preferences, click network, click advanced, click TCP/IP and the numbers that are after the word router is your ip address.

once you have your ip address, type it where you type websites no www. or .com and hit enter. if it asks for user name and password, leave user name blank, and type admin in the password spot. you now should be able to edit your router. click wireless, click wireless security (not directly to security) and you can see/edit your password.

With an internal modem, your PC is the router. Turn on Internet Connection Sharing so that the connection your modem represents is shared to the Ethernet port, then plug the WAN side of the router into the Ethernet port. Plug your other computers into the router's LAN side and use one of them to configure the router. You will have trouble networking with your other computers this way but they will be able to reach the Internet.

The better way to go: dump the internal DSL modem and get an external one to plug your router into. Letting the external devices deal with the link to your ISP will take some workload off the PC and add a layer of safety by shielding your network from the public Internet.
I have not heard of an internal DSL modem. If indeed you have one, that may be your problem. Being it is internal, it may not have any ports to connect to a router. Suggest you check the manual that came with it or google for the manual.

What type of router would be good for a small three level home. The desktop/modem is currently on the top floor. Laptop would be used on lower levels one of which is a basement. Would I need a wireless adapter for the desktop or would it stay plugged into the modem? What type of router do I need and how do I connect the two computers to it?
You could have a wireless router still plugged into your computer and then you can wirelessly connect the other laptop. You could have the wireless router installed on the middle floor for best connection strength all round but this would mean buying a wireless adapter for your computer aswell.

How to forward all internet traffic to a specific port on router?

I have an ADSL router, but not an ADSL connection. Can I plug my current wired router into an ethernet port of a wireless router and forward all traffic to the port for the wired router? How can I do this? How to forward all internet traffic to a specific port on router?
I take it your ADSL router is the wireless one.

As far as i can think, you should just be able to connect the wireless router into one of the LAN ports on your wired router (the one connected to the internet)

Then you can either assign an appropriate IP address to the WAN port of the wireless router, or let the wired router assign it one automatically

How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?

I have just bought a wireless router, because I want to connect my PS3 via a wireless connection. But, the ethernet port on the back of my computer is already being used by my modem. Do I need to connect both my modem and my wireless router to an ethernet port? Please help? How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?
on the router, there are maybe 5 rj45 jacks. they are marked 1 - 4 and uplink.

uplink goes to the cable/dsl modem.

1 - 4 go to your work stations. How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?
This is how it should work. Your wall cable should be plugged into the modem (in). Then connect your Wireless router(in) to the modem (out). If you have a desktop without wireless connection, connect the ethernet cable to the router (1,2,3,4..etc, any port will do). You will need to run the setup on your computer to configure the router. After setting up the router, your PS3 or other wireless devices should be able to find your wireless network and you can connect them without problem.
The modem connects to the router and only the router via an ethernet cable... you would then plug your computer to the router.

The PS3 will use the wireless off of the router with no cords (obviously)
You connect both the computer and the modem to the router.

How can I prevent my wireless router from interfering with my internet connection?

I have a Linksys wireless router that disconnects from the internet whenever I receive a phone call. It has something to do with the router switching channels, I don't know how to keep it from happening! How can I prevent my wireless router from interfering with my internet connection?
You're using a cordless phone? The phone is interfering with the router. Connect to the router and try changing channels (http://192.168.1.1/Wireless_Basic.asp the 3rd item). Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the ends and middle of the range, so use the one farthest from the current one.

Or you have a DSL internet connection? Make sure that everything plugged into a phone jack - EXCEPT the modem - has a filter on it.

It's almost always one or the other. How can I prevent my wireless router from interfering with my internet connection?
Unfortunately, your phone operates in the 2.4GHz radio frequency range - the exact same frequencies that wireless Ethernet uses.

The best solution is to replace your phone with one that operates in a different frequency range, e.g. 5.8GHz.

How to connect PS3 through the router instead of directly through the modem?

So I have a PS3 but whenever I play online games I get disconnected unless I am hooked up directly through the modem. Whether it is a wired or wireless connection through the router it doesn't matter, I always get disconnected. When connected to the modem there are no issues. I am using a Lynksis Wireless G router and all the proper ports are open. Any suggestions? How to connect PS3 through the router instead of directly through the modem?
what is your internet connection speed? I had this problem with my belkin router with my previous connection (1.5mbps). Since moving to a new town and getting a 20mbps connection, ive not had issues (and blazing fast downloads to boot). How to connect PS3 through the router instead of directly through the modem?
your router ports are either damaged or the settings aren't right because all the router does is split the signal to enable multiple connections and ip addresses if it's set up right . plug your computer through the router and do a ping test or ask your isp to do it using each port , then check the routers log to see why it disconnects . if you have the psn ports forwarded try enabling upnp and disabling media servers on the ps3 in network settings - you might just need a new router or to upgrade the routers firmware .
i have the same router and i get disconnected if im using wireless so i switched to wired but in your case u get disconnected on both. u might want to reset all the setting of ur router.
Look in the networking section of PS3 Secrets:

    http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html

Basically it is the wireless problem: bad signal likely caused by interruption from other sources (like neighbors that also use wireless access points).

How do I connect a Wireless router to my modem which is already connected to my PC?

Im going to buy a wireless router soon.Just want to know how do I connect it, without disconnecting my PC!How do I connect a Wireless router to my modem which is already connected to my PC?
You disconnect the Ethernet cable from your PC and plug that into the WAN port of your wireless router. Then you turn off the Cable or DSL to Ethernet bridge for 10-15 seconds to allow the bridge to handshake with your wireless router.

Then you can either enable the wireless adapter in your system or connect a CAT6 Ethernet patch cable from your PC's Ethernet card to the wireless router at one of the numbered Ethernet ports. How do I connect a Wireless router to my modem which is already connected to my PC?
    Hi,

There is nothing much has to be done. Just remove the ethernet cable running from your modem down to your pc and connect that to the wireless router. Then run a new cable from the wireless router to the PC.

    -GoosyGeek
The ethernet cable that comes out of your modem should go into the router's connection input and run your setup CD, follow instructions. then use output ports to computer and other devices.

How do you connect a wireless router to a network manually?

If it helps, the router i have is a linksys wrt54g v.3. I can't connect it using a flash drive because the router doesn't have a USB port. How do you connect a wireless router to a network manually?
Assuming you already have an Internet connection (wireless routers aren't themselves wireless), you disconnect the cable from your computer to the modem and plug it into the router. Another cable then goes from the router to where the other end of the original cable went.

In other words, the router gets connected between your modem and your computer(s).

Hope that helps. How do you connect a wireless router to a network manually?
Wait, you're trying to connect it to an existing network? I don't thing you can...

ROUTERS simply broadcast an internet signal from your modem/broadband box over an area wierlessly. Normally, you just connect the ethernet cable from the modem out t othe router's ';internet'; port.

How to match router security and access settings with the computer?

Please I need help! It's really frustrating! My router is working fine but for some reason my computer wont accept it because it doesnt match the computers setting. Help! How to match router security and access settings with the computer?
You need to be more specific with your question.

The only thing your router talks to is your network device on the computer (network card or wireless adapter).

Most routers come with very specific instructions on how to set them up and configure them. Have you followed the installation procedures according to the documents? That's usually the answer to 90% of such problems.

  • How do I disconnect my router without knocking off the internet connection to my PC?

My grandmother recently got rid of a laptop and still has the wireless router hooked up to her PC.

I have a wire going from the cable modem into the router and anoother ethernet wire going from the router to the PC.

    If i disconnect the router from the computer and plug in the regular ethernet cable from the modem to the computer it says ';limited or no connectivity';

I can't disconnect the wireless network without disconnecting my whole PC from the internet. Someone please tell me a way I can do this without disconnecting the internet from my PC and getting the wireless router out of the computer to take it somewhere else. How do I disconnect my router without knocking off the internet connection to my PC?
Sounds to me like it's a problem with IP addresses.

Is the PC set to configure its IP through DHCP? From the computer's vantage, its IP has always been provided from the router (192.168.0.1 usually). The cable modem is serving the IP address from the ISP, which is another one.

I would check the POP settings on the PC's internet connection and make sure it isn't manually assigning an IP. If it's set for DHCP, you might want to log out or use ipconfig to renew your DHCP lease. How do I disconnect my router without knocking off the internet connection to my PC?
Plug the wire going from the cable modem to the router into the slot in the pc that is currently being used by the wire from the router to PC. Now your router is out of the loop. Reset your cable modem. This requires a complete power down of the modem, mine has a battery back up that has to be removed. When you repower the modem it should reset your IP address and connections. Hope this solves the problem.
You need to power down everything, then power the modem and then the pc. This should force an auto-detect.

How can I set up a wireless router without having working Ethernet port on my laptop computer?

For some reason, the ethernet port on my laptop is not functioning. I just purchased a wireless router, and according to

the instructions for setup I need to at some point in the process connect the router to my computer. I heard somewhere a while back that there is a way to set up the wireless router without connecting the router to my computer AND without using the intallation software the router came with. I am however able to connect to the internet with a USB cable, but my router (and all other routers in the store) do not have a USB connection port.

From what I can gather, it has something to do with typing a generic IP address into a web browser or something.

    CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!

    Any advise is GREATLY appreciated.

Well the generic ID has to come from you service provider but if you have a wireless modem that is supported by the server then they can help set you up But you have to insist that you want to set it up wireless or they will try to throw you off and make you spend money tht you do not have to
Dude, you have to have a connection to the router somewhere. If you are hooking up a router - I would assume that you have more than one computer. Can the laptop go wireless?

Don't you have a desktop that you can connect to the router with?
Assuming all of the above is correct, that the Ethernet port actually is broken (and not a matter of a driver) it then comes down to the model and manufacturer of the router and their default settings.

If their default settings have the wireless interface turned on, you can see if you can connect to it.

To do this, you'd click on the Wireless icon on your task bar, by the clock. Or you can click on Start%26gt; Connect to%26gt; Show all Connections. Yet another way, opening up My Computer and clicking on My Network places.

After that, you'd right click on your wireless connection and click on ';View availble wireless networks'; and then connect to the one listed. Like, ';Linksys'; or ';Mshome'; or whatever the default is for your device.

After you are connected, you can administer the router by typing in it's IP address. Probably 192.168.0.1. You can discover what it is by going to Start%26gt;Run typing in CMD and then typing IPCONFIG and looking at the IP address for the default gateway for your wireless connection.

If that works, you're in luck. However, most routers do not have the wireless part enabled by default if they have ethernet ports on them. And would require connecting to it.

If your laptop is out of the question, going to a friends computer long enough to enable the Wireless part would work as well.

Are you using a ';router'; that plugs directly into your computer rather than a separate box that is wired in? I have a friend who used one of those and tried to use that computer as a router / gateway using the cell card / router in that machine. In short, it didn't work.

You can buy a special router that accepts cell based router cards that then act as a normal wired router so you can connect other wireless routers (some may have a built in wireless so you don't have to get a separate one) and/or other computers to it.

How can my laptop connect to my router so i have wireless internet?

Ok I do have a internet service provider and they gave me a router when they installed my internet. The router is a Terayen TJ 715X all it came with was a ethernet cable and no software. I can connect to the internet but only using the ethernet cable but I want to connect wireless. And yes my Wifi is turned on. How can I get the router to send the signal to my laptop? How can my laptop connect to my router so i have wireless internet?
I think what you have is only a modem not a router, you need to buy a wireless router for you to use your laptop's wireless features.

If you will buy a router, please note that there are two kinds of routers, a wired and a wireless, so you will be buying the right one.

Hope this helps :)How can my laptop connect to my router so i have wireless internet?
Terayon TJ715X is not a router, it is a modem. This means you lack the ability to use wireless, to route and have no firewall. What you need is a wireless router to attach to the modem. In fact, even if you use just the ethernet I would suggest you get a router, if for nothing else then to NAT your internal network and keep your computer safe.

There are many you can get, but I would suggest a WRT54G. I do so only because it is so popular and there are plenty of pages to get help with one.
you should have a wireless capable router...your provider provides you only with ethernet connection..you can buy one...good luck...jexter@eastern.com.ph

nope. different protocols. 802.11 b/g was 5yrs ago..802.11 n is today. Your old router can work but that wasnt the question. It will be slower by default..what is your speed? 54mbp/s?? new routers can pull upto 300mbp/s check into that

I have a new router and my other computer is not picking up the internet. How do I fix this?

I bought a new router today because my son's laptop kept on being dropped off of the internet. I managed to connnect this one to the internet using the exact same settings as the old router. My son's computer automatically connected to the new setting and it has a 169 ip address and won't actually connect to the new network. How do I fix this?I have a new router and my other computer is not picking up the internet. How do I fix this?
you need to use the correct WEP or WPA.

    Else

Need to know how are you set up.

    all in one access point?

    modem then router?

    Is the router wireless?

You have to set up the internet access while the pc is hooked up with an ethernet cable before you can use the wireless capabilities.I have a new router and my other computer is not picking up the internet. How do I fix this?
If you look on behind your modem (flashy lights on it) there is supposed to be a reset option to press, you might need something very skin to reach it, connect your router and modem, and then reset (resetting might take few seconds) but in other words it reset the way internet is coming in your house, so if you connect a new router, it will detect it on reset and apply the settings needed to make internet work on your new router.

    hope it helps
The 169.192.x.y is the correct address. You don't use the term ';wifi'; but since this laptop is dropped I must assume that this is a wifi issue. Did you set up a security for this new router? If so from your son's computer click start, My Network and then Set Up Home or Small Office Network. Enter the name our your network and the Network Key that you used to set up the router.

It is also possible that your son's computer is too far from the router. Walls, floors, heating ducts, appliances and 2.4ghz wireless phones interfere.

Tell us a little more about this.
in this case your sons computer probably has the wireless port chip broken if so then you can get one on www.fries.com

How do I set up a wireless router to piggyback off a hard wired router?

I have a hard wired network in my house and recently got a laptop. Going to a totally wireless network is not an option. I have heard you can connect a wireless router to a hard wired router. What do I need to do to accomplish this? How do I set up a wireless router to piggyback off a hard wired router?
    You can wire both together.

The best way, to avoid IP conflicts, is to run a cable from the LAN port of #1 to router #2 WAN port. However, you have to set things up right first...

    1) Log into the admin page of #2, and set the IP address to something different than router #1, else routing won't work. ie: 192.168.33.1 or something else... (but in 192.168.x.1 range)

    2) Set the wireless channel on #2 to something different than #1 (if it's wireless - if not, skip this step), like channel 1 or channel 11, assuming #1 is at default channel 6.

    3) Set #2 WAN port to use DHCP

    4) Plug LAN port from #1 to WAN port #2

That should do it. However, there are some gotchas:

    1) Computers on router #1 cannot see computers on router #2, because #2 is blocking incoming requests, as routers do...

    2) Computers on #2 can see everything on #1 LAN (all local computers, because they initiate the outgoing connections (so put servers, etc. on Router #1)

    3) all computers on #1 and #2 can get to the internet, wired or wirelessly...

Now, on some routers (not many), they may not want to router 192.168.x.y packets, as it is supposed to be ';non-routable';. In that case, set the second router LAN address to something else, and see if that works...

How to remove computer server and replace with regular router?

I was wondering if anybody know how to remove server and replace it with regular router. I tried to pull out old server, and replace it with router, but the internet is suddenly dead. I checked the server, and apparently it was set into a static IP. How can I remove the server without taking down the internet? How can I make the router generate its own IP address? The sequence should be Internet%26gt;modem%26gt;server%26gt;router%26gt;switch%26gt;clie鈥?Thank you.How to remove computer server and replace with regular router?
The sequence you wish to use is odd to say the least and of no real value.

The server provides DNS and DHCP to the LAN. Puttiing a router behind the server forces the LAN onto a different subnet for no reason. It makes something that is fairly easy unnecessarily complicated.

If you wish to proceed, you will have to teach the router the proper routing table for your subnets and make sure the router subnet differs from server subnet and then activate DHCP on router and have all LAN devices use router for DHCP and DNS. WAN side of router defers these tasks to server.

If you want to make the server a web server and protect the LAN devices, I recommend a router with a DMZ port.

How do i set up my wireless router to share internet on two PCs?

I have a wireless router and I'm hoping to use it to share the cable internet I have on one computer. The router is up and running (I tested for the wi- fi on a device) but my question is how do I connect it to a second desktop PC. I thought of connecting the second PC to the router with an ethernet cable but the cable isn't long enough. Any help is deeply appreciated. How do i set up my wireless router to share internet on two PCs?
Your second desktop will have to have a wireless adapter hooked up to it in order to receive the wireless signal from your router. If you connected the computer to the router with the ethernet cable, it wouldn't be wireless. Just go to any place that sells computer accessories and buy a wireless adapter. It would be a good idea to ask someone at the computer shop which adapter you should get and when you do get one, the directions on how to set it up will be included.

How old can a router be for good wireless Xbox live connection?

Im wondering if a 5 year old router would work very simmilar to a router bout like a week ago. Because my Xbox live connection wirelessly is working horrible. How old can a router be for good wireless Xbox live connection?
nope. different protocols. 802.11 b/g was 5yrs ago..802.11 n is today. Your old router can work but that wasnt the question. It will be slower by default..what is your speed? 54mbp/s?? new routers can pull upto 300mbp/s check into that

How do I get router password to host a web site on my computer?

I need to get my router's password so I can host a web site using WAMP. I have a Linksys WRK54G router, and need a guide on how to forward the ports and get the passwords. How do I get router password to host a web site on my computer?
If your box is in the default settings the username will be admin and the password is password. If it is not, you can perform a reset by using a paperclip and holding in the little reset button for 30 seconds. In the linksys manual I believe it says to hold it in for 30 seconds with the power plugged in, then unplug the power (still holding in the reset switch) for another 30 seconds. Then plug it in and it should be at factory settings again and the above user and pass should work.

Once you have logged in it will depend on the firmware version you are using, but you will be able to go into a section that will be called forwarding or port forwarding. There will be boxes that allow you to put in the ports to forward and which IP address on the network you want them to go to. You can then enter in the correct information and save the profile and you are done. How do I get router password to host a web site on my computer?

    no, login to your router.

If you are using a netgear router, type in Routerlogin.com

and if it asks for password and stuff

    type

    ADMIN for the username

    password for the password.

Than it'll login to your router, it'll show a page with a whole bunch of

tabs, to the left there will be an option that you can press that says

ATTATCHED DEVICES, click that and it'll tell you wat computers

and devices are attached according to the computers name.

so if your neighbors computer is called, DANS-PC it'll say that name as the connected device.

If you dont want anyone logging onto ur router.

    add WEP or WPA security.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on how to do this.

It's a rather very simple process though,.

oh... that's easy... turn the computer on... and then turn the wifi on the laptop on... unplug the power to the router... and the cable modem... wait 30 seconds... then plug them back in, wait 1 minute or so... then plug them back in... and the laptop should pick it up with no problems... and oh... you're wifi connection will be the one with the strongest signal. now... if you have any questions... im me at mav2541015. now... that 192.168.1.1 will only work with linksys routers... so... you may or may not need to do that... but eric is right... you need wep setup so no one can access the router but you!
You don't have to do a thing to the router, just turn power off the modem, connect the router via WAN port to the modem (with power off), Turn power on both units simultaneously and wait 0ne minute for boot-up. You can turn on your computer and it should find WiFi connection.
Hi, open your browser and type 192.168.1.1

After this, you will able to login with the default username and password.

How do you use templates and a router for cutting wood?

I've read that a good technique is to (1) cut a template out of hardboard or MDF, (2) rough cut the work piece 1/8'; larger than the template, (3) attach the template and use a flush router bit to cut the workpiece flush to the template. I've tried this using 3/16'; hardboard for my template, but when I do the router cut I'm having a hard time making the cut flush to the template. The router I'm using is a straight router with a bearing at the top. I'm a novice at using the router, so any advice is appreciated. How do you use templates and a router for cutting wood?
Rich, right off the bat the answer to your question is,...with experience. That being put aside, your question is way to general. Templates are usually used as a pattern and a straight edge to make a cut. Hardwoods, even if your bit is just catching it can easily overheat or burnout a router bit in a heartbeat causing it to jam and make it impossible to properly control. Is your bearing wider than 3/16? Does the piece you want to cut require using a plunger type router? Try very simple things first. Routers, even for experienced carpenters can be tricky. How do you use templates and a router for cutting wood?
    Hi Rich,

I would say the router is the most versatile tool in my shop and I use the techniques you describe in my work cutting hinges in hardwood exterior doors. I can think of only two suggestions for your problem. One may be the quality of your cutter, generally the more expensive cutters have higher quality bearings which will last longer and have tighter tolerances between the bearing and the cutter. Secondly it may be your technique, try cutting in both directions. In one direction the cutter will pull itself into the wood and tightly against the template. In the other direction the cutter will push away from the wood and will require more passes to get a a good fit.

    Hope this helps.

You have your ethernet from the Internet going into the WAN or INTERNET port on your router and your wired computer connected into the LAN on the router. Does that computer get online? If so it may be an issue with wireless settings on the computer. Either way power down the router, wait 30 seconds and power it back on. restart all computers. Can you connect to any now? If wired won't go on, call your ISP again. If it does but you cant connect wirelessly, update again and I will expand my answer.

Thanks sooo much! How to connect a wireless router to a cable modem?
Most ISP (cable) are easy to set up, the installation CD is usually used on the PC that can get online through the modem - pop it in and folloe instructions or you can try the following:

1.) Power off both modem and router.

2.) Plug the ethernet cable from your modem to the internet port of the router and one computer to one of the 4 ports (preferably the PC that's already wired to the modem using an ethernet cable).

3.)Power up modem, wait for the light to stabilize (or when ';online'; light is lit) - this indicates your modem has established communication to your ISP.

4.)Power up your router. Check if the wired PC is online no need for the installation CD.

Your wireless laptop should be able to detect and connect to your wireless network,

Oh yeah, some ISPs (partricularly most cable companies) need MAC cloning... if you still can't get online through the router but can with one of your computers when plugged in to the modem, try this:

1.)Connect the same PC that can get online through the modem to your router, go to the router's Setup page and look for the utility page where you can do a ';Mac Clone';.

    2.)Save your settings.

You can contact Netgear's techsupport 1-888-METGEAR or 1-888-6384327 (as per their website). How to connect a wireless router to a cable modem?

hook an Ethernet cable into one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the router and connect it to your laptop.open a web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1,that will prompt you for a login and password. It is usually admin for both.Go into the options and equip either wpa or wep security, write down the security key, name your wireless network and click done.Your router will reboot to reflect the changes.Next go into your wireless card network manager, click your network, enter the wep or wpa security key and connect.

Unless the TV has Internet Protocol capability, you can't connect it to any router, wireless or wired. Internet protocol is not the same as over-the-air TV reception.

If it does (these days, I wouldn't predict what is or isn't possible) have wireless capability, check the router's description. Most routers these days have both wired and wireless capability.

Hope this helpsHow can check if somebody is using my wireless router?

If you need to use a default password the one for Linskys is admin and the one for a NetGear router is password with no username on either.

good luckHow to configure my router so that I can connect to the internet through wifi?
oh... that's easy... turn the computer on... and then turn the wifi on the laptop on... unplug the power to the router... and the cable modem... wait 30 seconds... then plug them back in, wait 1 minute or so... then plug them back in... and the laptop should pick it up with no problems... and oh... you're wifi connection will be the one with the strongest signal. now... if you have any questions... im me at mav2541015. now... that 192.168.1.1 will only work with linksys routers... so... you may or may not need to do that... but eric is right... you need wep setup so no one can access the router but you!

How to use router if need to operate wired desktop, wireless laptop and wifi phone on mac bound wan connection?

I submitted my linksys router mac address (found on the back of router) to my wan operator (who provides mac based connection) but my wireless laptop and wifi phone did not connect.

How to use router to connect wired desktop, wireless laptop and wifi phone using mac bound wan connection? How to use router if need to operate wired desktop, wireless laptop and wifi phone on mac bound wan connection?
Ok, so you gave them your mac. How long ago? Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours to go through.
