I am having issues with my internet not working properly. I want to try to plug my cable internet into my computer or laptop, without using my router to see if it is an internet connection problem or a router problem; because I do not want to buy another router. just unplug the cable from the router and plug it in the back of your computer it just has to be the same type plug. it look like a phone jack but bigger
Yeah, run one Ethernet cable from the back of the modem to the Ethernet connection on the computer. If that doesn't work, turn off the computer and the modem. Leave it off, and go watch a TV show, then comeback and turn on the modem...wait 2 minutes and then turn on the computer. This will re-authorize the connection using the computer MAC instead of the router MAC which the cable company is expecting.
Also, you'll want to connect to the computer anyway because if you are having a modem problem, they won't help you because they will just blame it on the router, so get this to work first. If you have to call the cable company, do not tell them you have a router, just connect your computer to the modem and tell them your can't get on the Internet. This gives them no reason to blame the router.
Take the ethernet cable from the modem to the router and run it modem to computer. If it works, then you have a bad router.
simply plug the ethernet cable (cat 5) cable from the cable modem to the network port on your laptop
It should just actually work but there are many different providers / configs. After you do it make sure there is a ';link light'; on both devices . This is the low level troubleshooting, if you don't have that nothing higher matters in the chain. You may need a crossover cable if you don't get a link
