What is the different between router and modem?

We use router to separate the network, when a packet reach to router, the router check it routing table to decide where to forward the packet. The router is connected to modem, I curious what going on there between router and modem, can I connect to isp without modem? Why need modem? Just for the sake of signal translation? Does the modem tell router how to connect to the ISP? For example like giving router the ip address of the ISP?What is the different between router and modem?
basically the modem connects to the ISP and it is needed to connect for the internet. The router allows any isp connection ( or any type of network connection ) to be used by other individuals. Unless your router is a modem/router, then their still a need for you to use the modem ^+^What is the different between router and modem?
You pretty much have it right. The modem makes the actual connection to your ISP, handling security log-in and making sure you really deserve to have service.

The router then just piggybacks on that connection and spreads it around for you.
Need both router and modem.

Router finds IP address.
