How far can I get from a router with a laptop to go wireless?

Can I go next door or across the street? Is the distance greater for depending on the router?How far can I get from a router with a laptop to go wireless?
Depends on the router, but usually a max of 200ft.How far can I get from a router with a laptop to go wireless?
Usually around 100 metres is the limit. And the more stuff in between (like walls) the less distance.

However, u can build directions antennae which will allow u more distance.

Visit this page for an idea of what they do: http://windsurf.mediaforte.com/roadtrek/
It depends on what wifi technology you're using.

';Wi-Fi networks have limited range. A typical wireless router using 802.11b or 802.11g with a stock antenna might have a range of 32 m (120 ft) indoors and 95 m (300 ft) outdoors. The new IEEE 802.11n however, can exceed that range by more than double. Range also varies with frequency band. Wi-Fi in the 2.4 GHz frequency block has slightly better range than Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz frequency block. Outdoor ranges - through use of directional antennas - can be improved with antennas located several kilometres or more from their base. In general, the maximum amount of power that a Wi-Fi device can transmit is limited by local regulations, such as FCC Part 15[36] in USA.';
it really depends on a few things:

1. type of WiFi router

2. type of WiFi card in your laptop

3. interference

4. other devices that would slow down your WiFi

IEEE 802.11a has a max range of 15~30 meters (50~100 feet)

IEEE 802.11b 45~90 m (150~300 feet)

IEEE 802.11g 45~90 m (150~300 feet)

IEEE 802.11n 70~250 m (230~820 feet)

there are also speed differences but if you're just browsing it wont' matter much

most common devices are 802.11g, some older ones might still be 802.11b and brand new devices, if you're lucky work on 802.11n
