My roomate just moved in and I'm trying to set up the security on my Belkin router. I've had the router set up and running now for several weeks with no security.
I'm confused as to whether the software for the security will run through one computer or if I have to put the software on both?

Plug your computer into the router with an ethernet cable. Run the CD that is included with your router and it will take you through some set up steps. One of these steps will set up an opportunity to set up a password. Once you have a password set up, it will ask you for it when you go to access the router. You will have the opportunity to save it on your computer, so you really only have to do it once

read read and read. The router will have ';help available'; all over the place. I dont recommend using others help because it can get very complicated. Basically there is a password and then a quiple of types of security. People can get software off the internet to by pass the security. Use the high security for best results. You have to have the router ip address and enter it into the Http:// as you would a regular internet site. There may even be a simple way with the program itself. Only one computer is needed for the software.

How can I set up a second router in my home to increase the wireless range?
We have one router at the top of the house, but it has four floors, and it's not possible to get a wireless signal. My friend gave me a second router (a decent netgear one) and I want to set it up on the second bottom floor so that it is possible to access the internet anywhere within the house. Don't set it up as a new wireless source it will keep you from being able to do any file sharing with your computers connecting upstairs.
First plug an ethernet cable straight from your computer to the new netgear routers LAN 1 port. Plug up power to the netgear. Next. Open up Internet Explorer and at the top of your screen in the URL box and type in 192.168.0.1 click go or enter.
Username = admin / Password = password
Next click on LAN IP setup. Then Uncheck use router as DHCP checkmark box. Here is a screenshot...

This will make your new wireless router act as a wireless switch and your main router upstairs will be your only router. Now plug up an ethernet line from your router upstairs to your new router in it's LAN2 port and you will be good to go. You may have to unplug the new router then plug it back in for the main router to see it properly.

I would set up wireless repeaters instad of routers... for the simple reason each router would then need it's own IP addressing and network ID...
if you had a machine downstairs on that router, it would be networked differetly than the machines on the upstairs router. the problem with this owuld be if you ever moved from one area to another, the machines would ahve to doisconnect and reconnect, rather than just hopping from one repeater to another...
Connect the second router's uplink port to the first router's Lan port using ethernet cables. Then setup second router's wifi with different SSID %26amp; channel.
Option 1: you could get a booster or bridge and use it without connecting ethernet cables.
Option 2: You could get high powered USB wifi card from amazon.com and use that wifi adaptor to access the first router.

When you are installing the router and it says please wait while we check your internet connection settings, reset your modem. As soon as it starts checking connection settings reset it. Well first you have to make sure that the cat5 port to the hi speed modem is connected to the modem and not your computer. Second, make sure your computer is connected to either one of the 4 router ports to your network card on your pc. Once its connected, reboot your machine, when its back up, unplug your modem for about a minute and then reconnect it, do the same to the power of the wireless router. In a standard configuration this should get you up and running.

For some reason, the ethernet port on my laptop is not functioning. I just purchased a wireless router, and according to
the instructions for setup I need to at some point in the process connect the router to my computer. I heard somewhere a while back that there is a way to set up the wireless router without connecting the router to my computer AND without using the intallation software the router came with. I am however able to connect to the internet with a USB cable, but my router (and all other routers in the store) do not have a USB connection port.
From what I can gather, it has something to do with typing a generic IP address into a web browser or something.

Assuming all of the above is correct, that the Ethernet port actually is broken (and not a matter of a driver) it then comes down to the model and manufacturer of the router and their default settings.
If their default settings have the wireless interface turned on, you can see if you can connect to it.
To do this, you'd click on the Wireless icon on your task bar, by the clock. Or you can click on Start%26gt; Connect to%26gt; Show all Connections. Yet another way, opening up My Computer and clicking on My Network places.
After that, you'd right click on your wireless connection and click on ';View availble wireless networks'; and then connect to the one listed. Like, ';Linksys'; or ';Mshome'; or whatever the default is for your device.
After you are connected, you can administer the router by typing in it's IP address. Probably 192.168.0.1. You can discover what it is by going to Start%26gt;Run typing in CMD and then typing IPCONFIG and looking at the IP address for the default gateway for your wireless connection.
If that works, you're in luck. However, most routers do not have the wireless part enabled by default if they have ethernet ports on them. And would require connecting to it.
If your laptop is out of the question, going to a friends computer long enough to enable the Wireless part would work as well.

How to connect my desktop to a router that is 100 meters away?
I have a desktop pc upstairs and a desktop downstairs. The downstairs is connected to a wireless sky router. The upstairs one is connect using a wireless usb adapter but this takes about 10 minutes to connect. I want to have a wired connection upstairs to the router downstairs.
