How do you get wifi through a wireless router by plugging into a laptop with wired internet?

i have a wireless router through the phone company. it doesnt work b/c we get internet through the cable company but never got rid of the router. i want wifi but i dont wanna buy a new router is their anyway to plug the wireless router into my laptop that is wired and make the wireless router emit wifi signals for my ipod touch?How do you get wifi through a wireless router by plugging into a laptop with wired internet?
