Set up a Linksys Wireless Router

Step 1

Choose and purchase a Linksys router, taking into account your budget and computing habits.

Step 2

Attach the antennas to the Linksys wireless router.

Step 3

Place the router in a central location, making sure it's not surrounded by metal. (A signal can't be obtained through metal.) The router should be located so that the distance between clients (computers) is somewhat equal. This will create a better connection.

Step 4

Plug the Ethernet cable into the ';Internet'; port on the back of the Linksys router.

Step 5

Connect a computer to the router by plugging another Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer and attaching the other end to one of the available ports on the back of the router. You can choose any port except the one labeled ';WAN.';

Step 6

Plug the router into an electrical outlet.

Step 7

Wait for the power light to stop flashing, at which time the router is finished booting up. While the router is booting, the power light will be blinking. This process may take a few minutes to complete.

Step 8

Reboot your computer so it can access a new IP address from the router through the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

Configure the Router

Step 1

Open your web browser, type '; http://192.168.1.1/ '; into the address bar and hit ';Enter.';

Step 2

Use ';Admin'; as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank.

Step 3

Connect to the Internet and click on ';Internet Setup.';

Step 4

Select your connection type from the drop-down menu. Choose ';DHCP'; for cable modems or ';PPPoE'; for most DSL modems. If you are unsure of these options, check with your ISP.

Step 5

Set a service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.

Step 6

Encrypt your wireless connection using a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key. Under the ';Wireless Security'; option, enter a passphrase and click ';Generate.'; This will generate a password which will need to be used by any client connecting to your router.

How do I connect to my router without going on the internet?

I may have messed up some of the properties on my router so now I can't get on to the internet, but if I was able to access my router I could change all that back. Please help. How do I connect to my router without going on the internet?
You're a little confused.

Forget what you're thinking, because it's not the right way of thinking about it.

What you need to do is the following:

Find the little reset button on your router -- its probably on the back and you may need to use the point of a ball point pen to fit in the hole where the switch is located to push it.

Now, press and hold that reset button for about 30 seconds to reset your router back to factory defaults.

This is about the only way you're going to get back on to your router.

Good Luck!

How can I set up a router to automatically disconnect connections after so long?

I don't think that this feature is built into all routers, so if there is a recommended router to do the job, please let me know. How can I set up a router to automatically disconnect connections after so long?
I wonder ... if you set the timeout for the IP address to be given to the client. Then maybe set an option to not renew the IP. Theoretically that would work, so you could set the time for the IP address to be valid, and then it wouldn't automatically give them a new one. hmmmm .... I am sure there is another way.

Hmm.. I had the problem that my DSL Modem was left switched on all the time and everyday the router would stop responding because my ISP reset my connection..

I fixed it by getting one of those timers that turn power on and off, and setting it to switch the router off for a few mins in the middle of the night when I was asleep..

You could do this by MAC filtering in your wireless router. Every wireless adapter has a MAC code - you can find out your own by opening a command prompt (run CMD) and in the command window, type ipconfig /all and hit enter.

Look for the MAC code (will be called physical address and will be 6 pairs of characters) of your wireless adapter and write it down. In your router settings enable MAC filtering and add your MAC code - set it to enable/allow if that is in the settings. Repeat for each laptop you want to allow and save settings if necessary.

Now no other laptop with an unknown MAC code can access your network as it restricts to only the ones you have entered. Of course if your roommate finds out her MAC code and adds it into the router himself you'll be back to square 1...How do I block a specific computer from my wireless router?

link sys uses http://192.168.1.1 to get to the config page

default login and password are both admin... if that doesn't work you more than likely have to reset the device. There is a hole to poke a a paper clip thru, usually in the back. Do this and try the admin thing again.

do not forget to change the password so it is not admin... don't use real words %26amp; make sure it is at least 8 alphanum char (I hate it when I find out I get into an account b/c somebody uses the word password)How do I hook up my speed stream dsl to a lynksys wireless router?
most likely you need to set your DSL user name and password in the router administration area to access your provider.

Try typing http://192.168.1.1/ into a browser on your computer attached to the router. there should be an area to set log-in stuff.

You're question is a bit confusing. What are you trying to do?

Where I'm lost is what you are trying to 'sync'. Do you have public folders on your Desktop that you would like to access via your laptop?

The simplest way would be to:

    1) physically connect your laptop to an open LAN port on the router or

    2) connect via wireless 802.11.a/b/g/n to your router.

Then if you have configured your Desktop to have a domain/workgroup you should be able to network to that desktop, browse to the folders that are allowed to be seen and copy/access anything you want (again within user availability/permissions).How do I link my two computers together from the router and the main network?

How can I hide my wireless router from being broadcast to other people?

I'm trying to hide my router from being broadcast to other people and i already have a secured router. I just wanted to be broadcast in my home not my neighbors. How can I hide my wireless router from being broadcast to other people?
Seeting up your your router SSID for wireless connection

You have to restrict your wireless router from people connecting through your network by using SSID authentication.

You need to enable your SSID Broadcast on your router so that anyone that connect using wireless have to enter the SSID key generate by your router.

Also you can make the Key length of 128bit to make it dificult to hack or get.

It is really technical but if you follow the manual instructions you might get more information about how to setup you SSID for your router. How can I hide my wireless router from being broadcast to other people?
Wireless encryption can be useless. Cable in my area is through Charter - which won't allow the cable modem itself to encrypt outgoing data. Why have wireless security when the cable is unsecure? Limit MAC addresses, turn off DHCP and go STATIC, turn off SSID Broadcast, use an out of band channel.

I said the above because, wireless encryption can cause more hassle than it IS worth. Chances are - noone wants your data - and the data they do want is probably already encrypted by your browser. Sure data encryption is a GREAT idea, however many people are overly worried.

Basically you set your router to use WPA encryption (and you'll have to put the same key into your computers that you put into the router. The key is a phrase you make up - make it a long one, but one you can't forget).

It really doesn't matter if people can see the router broadcast - they can't use the router unless they know the key.
Disable the SSID. Depending on the router, go into router configuration, and under wireless - broadcast - disable.

    Voila
It's just a matter of going to your gateway and secure and encrypting your connection.

Thanks in advance. How to figure out your wireless router's username and password?
Go to the manufacturer's website, click on support, download the documentation for your router. Read it.How to figure out your wireless router's username and password?
If you can't remember the username and password for your router, you ought to be able to reset it to factory defaults. Most wireless routers have a reset button that, once pressed and held for 30 seconds, causes the router to revert to the settings it had when it was shipped from the factory. This means IP address as well as administrator password.

Check the documentation (it's online at the vendor site if you don't still have the hardcopy). It will give the username (likely ';administrator';) and the password (likely ';password';) which will then let you adjust the settings.
I'm an IT guy and this is a frequently asked question from some of our clients. The best way is to go to http://www.routerpasswords.com/ and there you will find all your answers.
    the defaults are typically

    UserID: admin

    Password: admin or: password

but it depends on your router. Check with google for an owners manual.
Call the manufacturer of the router. They should be able to help you.

I believe in KISS so a basic solution MAY be best. Complications ALWAYS cause problems.

Clearly you want to spend as little money as possible- so to the two replies I see, I would add my suggestion you buy in a 9dBi gain antenna for the router.

These can be bought for about GBP10 on eBay and should offer some sort of gain at appreciable distance from the router. Simply unscrew the supplied antenna and replace with the new. It is as simple as that! How do I get my linksys router to increase wifi range?
placement of the router can make a world of difference. Signal falls and bounces. Less walls the better and the higher the router the better.

Also don't laugh but check these vids. a simple foil dish will direct the signal where you want it to go.

If you want to spend the money you can get range expanders and additional access points.
You can buy another router and use it as a WiFi repeater (I'm not sure what model will do it with stock firmware but ASUS 5XX series with DD-WRT should do it). You may also try to flash your router with 3rd party firmware like D-WRT and increase the transmitter power. Or you may try upgrading to 802.11n standard, it should have extended range comparing to 802.11g

Well every wireless router have a little button somewhere on the back or side which you are able to press only by the tip of pen or needle. This button is used to reset the router settings. So plug your router in and press it for 5 seconds. Then the settings will be reset. You can access the router trough a software which come with the router or typing in a router 192.168.0.1 that's address to access the router interface and user name is usually ';admin'; password is nothing or ';admin';.
Try to use these password list http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

Ip address of router should be your gateway address when you connected with ethernet.

Simple way - reset your router, but good way - hack it. :)

ethernet cable from router to the desktop pc. this should work

no need to use usb.i used to use a seperate modem%26amp;router

untill i got an all in one combination modem%26amp;router in one box.How to use router when modem only has 1 ethernet port?
Use your router to establish the connection to your provider be it DSL or Cable. It has provisions for talking to both of them. Connect your router to the modem and your computers to the router. When you do this, turn everything off. This is to make sure all the software stuff gets reset.

Connecting this way is VASTLY safer anyway. When you have your computer directly connected to the web like you do now, you are basically connected to the web naked. The router is a GOOD firewall, one that is a lot harder to compromise then the software one on your computer. When you do get infected, the virus often tries (successfully way too often) to turn software firewalls off.

Once you do get both the laptop and desktop connected to the router, you can share files between them. You can also get a NAS (network attached storage) device and back up both computers to it through that router. I also have a network printer on mine so any computer can print to it.
If your router has multiple LAN ports, you can hook up your computer to one of them. My router has one port to connect the modem to, four other ports for networking computers, and wireless capability. If you haven't bought the router yet, look for these ports before you buy.

You can sometimes use both the ethernet port and the usb port simultaneously, but the modem is not meant to be used that way, so your connections may be unreliable.

You could also consider getting a wireless add-in card for your desktop, if the router you get doesn't have LAN ports. Something about going around your elbow, though...
Check if the router has more than one Ethernet port. It should definitely have a WAN port, but it might also have 4 or so other ports for Ethernet cables to connect the router to up to about 4 computers through wired connection, then add the wireless too. If it doesn't have even 1 extra Ethernet port to connect a computer to the router through wiring, then the USB to Ethernet adapter should work, under the impression that the USB port is meant for the same basics as the Ethernet port on the modem, but it's probably best if the router has the Ethernet ports to allow wired connections at the same time as wireless.
    Your question is confusing.

You don't need a Modem if you have a Router? You just use the filter's that your ISP (or whoever) has given you, and plug into the Router - you then do away with the modem.

A router is a device that is designed to share a single Internet connection between several computers

Look on the back of the router. Your typical home router will have 5 Ethernet RJ45 connectors on the back

One of those connectors is set a little apart from the other 4

That one will be labeled WAN (Wide Area Network) or Internet

The other four Labeled LAN (Local Area Network)

You connect you system this way

Internet %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Modem %26gt;%26gt; Router WAN Port

Router LAN Port (any one) %26gt;%26gt; Your Desktop

Where %26gt;%26gt; are Ethernet Patch cables

Once connected, use the Setup CD that came with the router to do the Initial Setup. Most the time - your on your way

Sometimes, the setup CD falls flat on it's face. If it does, don't lose your cool.

    Ditch the CD

    Drag out the manual

From the manual, see how to access your router using your browser

    Now find the page on the WAN setup screen that says something like ';clone your MAC ID';

    Click the button

    Save the settings

    restart the router

    that should let you surf

    Now set up your wireless

Do all setup from your desktop

Trying to setup a wireless system over a wireless connection is at best frustrating, and these days, normally not allowed for security reasons.

    On your wireless page

    Then at a minimum

    Access the router

    Enable security

Choose WPA2 encryption if you can. WPE and WPA can be cracked in a minute or less these days.

    Change and hide your SSID

Change the user name and password on your router.

For better security or if you must use a lower security encryption.

Use ipconfig /all from a DOS window on each machine

Get the MAC IDs of your Ethernet and wireless adapters for all computers in your network

Go to advanced in your router setup

    Go to MAC ID Filtering

Enter all the MAC IDs of your machines in the list

    Check them twice

Now enable MAC ID filtering and save your settings

Only machines with those MAC IDs will be allowed on the network

Now go to your laptop and connect using the password you entered when setting up encryption

    You in and surfing

How do I hook my wireless router up to clearwire?

I saw a picture thing that describes kind of how it works. It shows the clearwire modem right next to the computer and then the wireless router connected to it. My clearwire modem only receives a signal in a different room from our computer. Can I hook up a wireless router from in the other room? If so how do you do it, because looking at the modem now I don't understand where or how Im going to plug it in.How do I hook my wireless router up to clearwire?
    For Clearwire

You need a Wireless G Router.

You plug the Ethernet cord from your Modem into the Router, Instead of into the PC,

Then you go from the router to your computer.

and get it all set up.

(:How do I hook my wireless router up to clearwire?
keep the modem in the other room. plug it into the router the one in the wall plug it into the router and there you go.

You plug your modem into the WAN port of your router. Then you plug in any PC you want to phyiscally connect to the internet through the LAN ports.

It sounds like the PC from the other room is directly connected to your modem, you should take the cable out of the modem and put it into the LAN port. You might need an additional cat5e cable if the router didn't come with any, but plug an additional cable from the WAN port on the router to the modem.

If you want wireless connections you will have to set it up. You can usually access the routers software by going into internet explorer and typing in:

    192.168.1.1

    or

    192.168.1.2

    Depending on your router brand...

    Defaults are usually

    User: Admin

    Password: Password

There will be an option for wireless settings, if you don't know what you're doing I would say don't implement any security settings. You should be able to connect to the wireless network fine from there.
You really did not explain how you were connected to the Clearwire modem now. I am going to assume that you have a cable between the modem and your computer

So unplug the modem from the cable

With a new patch cord connect the modem to the WAN Port on the router

Plug the cable going to your computer into one of the LAN ports on the router

Access the router using your browser

Clone the MAC ID of your computer

Save the settings restart the router

you should be up and running

What kind of wireless router should I buy?

I am trying to set up a wireless network for my apartment. My roommate and I have laptops that have wireless capabilities. I don't have the slightest idea on how to set up this network. I know that I will need a wireless router, and SBC Yahoo DSL is providing me with a free wireless modem. I wanted to buy a router that was not that expensive. I want it to be somewhere in $50-$60 price range. I also want it to have step by step instructions that will show me how to set the router up. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, where would be a good store to buy a wireless router? What kind of wireless router should I buy?

the place you should buy your wireless router is at bestbuy, you should buy a Linksys router, purely for the reason that if you go onto youtube and lookup hack linksys, it will show you how to make it go up to 12 MB downloads, which means that you can downoad a full 1GB movie in about an hour %26amp; 15 minutes, which would normally take about 4 hours
If you want a simple to use wireless router, try Belkin, it has everything you need to set up wireless step by step. Go to Circuit City will be a good place to start.

How to use router when modem only has 1 ethernet port?

I am setting up my wireless tonight for my laptop. The router I am getting hooks up to the modem via an ethernet cord. The problem is that my modem only has 1 ethernet port which I have my desktop wired to it. #3 connect ethernet to the router #4 now connect with another

ethernet cable from router to the desktop pc. this should work

no need to use usb.i used to use a seperate modem%26amp;router

untill i got an all in one combination modem%26amp;router in one box.How to use router when modem only has 1 ethernet port?

    Hope that helps.

I only have one computer and its hooked up in the modem so how would a router give me extra security? How does a router add extra security to your computer?
a router can provide you with a great deal of security, and is certainly better than not having one at all. having your computer directly connected to a modem is not good practice and it can leave you open to attack.

if you are planning on implementing a wireless network, it is always a good idea to use encryption... an insecure wireless network is just as dangerous as having no protection at all.

routers will allow you to add network passwords, and encryption protocols to protect your network and information. they can also have a firewall function that prevents attackers from establishing a connection with your machine. How does a router add extra security to your computer?
well a router has many security features to it one being it has a hardware fire wall not software based firewall. as for the other many advantages they offer it depends on the model and manufacturer's specifications used in making that router some are safer than others.
Routers are (normally) firewalled. However, it's only against inbound intrusions and it's hard to determine how good the router's firewall protection is. So a strong software firewall is still a good idea.
The router acts as a hardware firewall giving you that extra wall of protection between you and the bad guys.

Think of it the router as a nightclub bouncer, and the web traffic as the people who want to get in. Naturally you won't want to let everyone into your club as not all these people have good intentions, that's where the router comes in. It's filtering that traffic discarding the bad stuff from ever making it to your computer.

Almost like becoming invisible on the internets.
A ';NAT'; router is a firewall.

Routers control %26amp; direct data traffic (in bundles called 'packets') to and from computers; either within it's own network (the Local Area Network = LAN) or; to %26amp; from the Internet (WAN = Wide Area Network).

When you request a webpage (URL) with your computer, the router passes the request through to the Internet, remembering which computer on it's own address table sent the request.

Inbound packets (data bundles), are matched (via information on the header) as a valid request, and directs the 'packet' to the requesting local computer. Unrequested packets are ignored (in effect 'blocked') and left outside the LAN.

The bundles are reassembled by your browser, and you see the webpage.

Routers have no way of interpreting what is 'clean' or what is malware; it just knows your machine asked for a certain URL and all it's components.

Requested packets, nasty payload or otherwise, will be delivered to the requesting computer (from the address table), and bingo; you get whatever was asked for.

So firstly, make sure, to the best of your ability, you know what your asking for over the Internet.

How do you hook a lan cord to a wireless router and make a wireless connection?

Iv tried to hook it up but then the internet doesnt work and im doing this so i can hook up internet to another computer. Oh and i have a Linksy Wireless router. How do you hook a lan cord to a wireless router and make a wireless connection?
You may want to look at the manual or some websites for certain details.

    It should go like this

    [Internet]~(modem)~(wireless router)~(computer)

From there, you'll need to set up the router from the plugged in computer if the router isn't sending wireless. On internet explorer, put in the address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and log into your linksys router (default login password should be ';admin'; depending on your model). There should be a wizard that will do almost all the work for you. Now you can connect with wireless computers.

The basics. Good luck. How do you hook a lan cord to a wireless router and make a wireless connection?
more details than simply ';the internet doesnt work'; are needed to troubleshoot the problem. without any, i suggest you follow instructions provided with the wireless router.

do your other computers have compatible wireless cards?
In order to get wireless internet you need a couple of things.

    1. A broadband or DSL Type modem (this is you internet Box)

    2. A Wireless Router (AKA Your Linksys Router)

    3. A computer with a wifi card(this will be either a usb, internal or PCMCIA card).

    4. a rj45 wire to connect your broadband/DSL modem to your linksys router

(follow thins link to find out what a rj45 connection is)

    http://www.nullmodem.com/RJ-45.htm

If your are not trying to go wireless just plug another rj45 connection from the back of you router to the back of your computer.

once you have connected the rj45 connection between the dsl box and router you need to go on the computer with the wifi connection and have it find and connect to the wireless router.

i sorry but i thank i know for to e mail here is person to email wolves75@mchsi.comHow do i connect my Linksys router to my modem and my computer?
But do you have a wireless modem on your computer? You might need something like a Logitech 2.5 GHz (or wahtever) to be plugged into your USB port.
The first time you connect your wireless modem to your router you want to reset the modem by unplugging it and then waiting 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Then wait another 30 second till it completely starts back up then plug it into your router then plug in your router. That should fix it since thats the problem 9 out of 10 times
make sure the modem and the router are nit using the same subnet. I think Linksys uses 192.168.1.1 as it's address by default. Change it to 192.168.11.1, save the configuration then power off and restart everything, including your computer. The next time you connect it will assign a new address to your computer that will not conflict with the modem. You will have to connect to 192.168.11.1 to get to your router's configuration screens after that.

I want to play on Xbox live but i can't find the pass word to the router so i couldnt connect because you need to know the password. is there any way i can reset it without knowing it?How can you reset a password on a wireless router without knowing the password?
You don't have to reset the router. Instead, log into it with a wired (Ethernet) computer, which doesn't need the encryption key (not really a password). When you do, look for a page on Wireless Security or the like and you should be able to find the encryption key.

To log into your router, use its local IP address in your browser's address window. To find that IP address:

    1. Click on the Start button.

    2. Click Run...

    3. In the text box, type in

    cmd

    and press Enter.

    4. A black ';DOS box'; window will pop up. Type into it

    ipconfig /all

    and press Enter.

    5. A bunch of seeming gibberish will fill the screen. In the section ';Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection,'; on the line next to ';Default Gateway'; your router's IP address should appear.

Good luck. How can you reset a password on a wireless router without knowing the password?
Depending on the model of router there is usually a little button on the back that you will need to press in for about 5 seconds and it clear the information. Just remember you may need the help of your internet provider to set soom settings on it. Also google your router brand to figure the default username and password. Usually they are just admin admin.
If you haven't changed any settings on your router, just do a search for *your router brand* default password.

If you changed the password and forgot it, most routers have a little button or hole that will reset them to factory settings. If it's a hole, stick in a pin or something small and hold down for 5 or 6 seconds. This should completely reset your router to like it was from the factory, so be sure you want to do this.

Yes you can. However, if you want to print, the desktop has to be on. Here's how you do it

    1) Go to Printers and right click on your printer. Enable the sharing and remember the printer name.

    2) Make sure all of your computers are on the same workgroup / domain. Then check the name of the computers (Right-click my computer, click properties, then go to name). Write down the names of both computers.

    3) Then, go to your laptop. Go to Printers, and click Add Printer. When it asks for local or network, click network. Then (assuming you're using Windows XP) and click the second button. Type in \\yourdesktopnamehere\printername (replace the yourdesktopnamehere and printername with the desktop name and the printer name. Hit next. You should be able to connect, and then finish the setup.

    4) To test that it works, go to Word or Notepad and print a page. It should work. How can I network my printer with two computers and a wireless router?
(This is on your desktop)Go to control panel, printers and faxes, right click your printer, left click sharing...., then share this printer and give it a name.
I am assuming that the two computers are on the same network but if not use the network set up wizard at Start%26gt;Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;Communication ...

Your ink jet is most likely not network capable but you can set it up as a ';shared'; printer on your network. In order for this to work both computers have to be turned on. On your desktop that the printer is attached to go to your Printers and Faxes folder (control panel) right click on the printer you want to share and select sharing from the menu that pops up. Follow the easy share set up steps and you are good to go.

Go to the laptop now and in your Printers and Faxes folder select Add new Printer. Select network printer and browse to your desktop and select your ink jet ... Windows will set up the necessary drivers (rare cases you will need to install the printer drivers on the laptop from the printer setup disk)
You could get a network print server, they price from about $30 and up, and connect printer to router directly (or wirelessly depending on the print server you chose, since u already have D-link rtr D-link print server would be good choice) do a print server search at these sites...

I have a D-link WBR series router. I got a ps3 upstairs and it usually picks up a signal of 50-60%. One day it just dropped, so it just hovers arounnd 20-30%. I have no idea what happened, but i really want to fix it. Can anyone tell me how i could improve the routers performance? How do i get my router to perform better?
You can improve performance with this site:

    http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/tem

I have used this for occasions to improve reception for customers that have their routers too far away or have interference affecting them. If you print off the windsurfer card onto card stock, and then glue tin foil on it, cut in the slots and tape it together, you would be surprised how much it will improve. Just remember to direct the parabolic antenna towards where you are. If you get stuck, you can view the systm video that shows it step by step on episode 45 at http://revision3.com/systm/surfer/.

Cool thing is they are basically free.

http://www.computertipstricks.comHow do i get my router to perform better?
Try changing the channel the router is using. There are 11 channels available, and most outers are shipped form the factory set to channel 6. When you get a neighbor on the same channel, they can step all over each other.

You only need to change the channel on the router. The comp. will find it.
    with my router,

i disconnect the cord connected to the wall outlet

wait around 10 seconds then connect it again.

then wait until all lights on the router are on again

i usually get my router to work better so

    hopefully it works for you

How do I make this router work with my pocket pc?

I got a Telus SE567 wireless router the other day. I got the internet working on the main computer, however, I wanted to connect with my HTC/pocket pc. I successfully connected, however, this wifi internet still won't work on my htc. Does anyone know the proper connection settings?

I had no problem connecting with my old router and shaw internet. How do I make this router work with my pocket pc?
You have to set up your wireless settings on your SE567 router before you can connect to it with your wireless device. You can access your router settings by going to http://192.168.1.254 and pressing the 'login' button in the top right corner. Log in with your username (admin) and the routers' default password (telus)

You can then access your wireless settings and set up your wireless key. If you need assistance with this, you may want to contact your ISP for step by step instructions! Good luck!

Dlink Router, 401 error message when I try to get on to the web configurations?

I have a Dlink router DI-624 which was on another computer but recently moved to a different computer. The router would not install, but worked anyway after being hooked up and sorting out the IP address mess. However, I can't access the web configurations to set it to a secure network, (and other features) even after reseting the router back to it's original defaults. It continues to give me a 401 error. Anyone know how to reslove this issue? I contacted Dlink, and am awaiting for a reply, but who knows how long that may take. Thanks.Dlink Router, 401 error message when I try to get on to the web configurations?
If you're getting a 401 unauthorized error when attempting to access the web interface, that means that you username and/or password that you are entering is incorrect. For this model, the username by default is admin and the password field should be left blank.Dlink Router, 401 error message when I try to get on to the web configurations?
401 means wrong address. you need the drivers for the router . . you shouldn't have to manually sort out IP address with a router it's all plug and play. for 30 bucks you can buy a new router
just make sure you have same IP address in your network, if the ip of dlink is 192.168.1.0, just do it manually put the ip add to your network like 192.168.1.1.
Connect and start the computer with the router connected by cable. Go to start/run and type cmd and enter. type ipconfig and enter to check it's real gateway address. This will be the bottom number. If you get no ip address, or a 169. address, the dhcp on the router is not working. It should work as default. If you get a 192.168 number it is working. Type the gateway address into your browser address bar. This should present the login page.
Did you get to the password page and than get a 401 access denied invalid login?

If so, look up the default login username and password on the dlink website page for that model router http://support.dlink.com

If you still can't login to the router using the default username/password...you DID NOT reset the router properly...find the manual on the above site and reset the router properly to factory defaults. And check the same manual for the proper i.p. address you are suppose to connect to.
In the manual it should tell the the IP addy.

A Dlink ip should be 192.168.0.1

type it in you address bar

How well does a wireless router work in a mobile home?

I'm getting a laptop and we already have a desktop. So we need a router so we can have both puters hooked up to the net. Will a wireless router work well in a mobile home? And what ranger am I looking at? if any.

ThanksHow well does a wireless router work in a mobile home?
It will work fine. Size will not matter, just make sure you setup a security key on the device.

Link below gives you some guidelines to follow.

    Good Luck and happy surfing!

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/supp…How well does a wireless router work in a mobile home?
It doesnt matter where u are they work everywhere, since ur in a mobile home its small so ur router will cover the range of it.
As with any radio signal, metallic objects divert the signal, and in practical terms, it will modify how far the signal can carry (usually a decrease in strength), so, if you put the router in the center of the MH, you might get it to cover the entire structure inside, but outside it may drop off quite a bit.
    Yes, that should work fine.

There are 3 major problems with wireless that can easily be fixed. You must make sure you put in a WPA password. WAP2 is even better. Otherwise, anybody within range can get into your network and do things to files on your computer.

Interference is another big issue. It seems like everybody uses channel 6. I suggest changing it to 1 or 11 if you experience the Internet cuts in and out. Do not use any channels besides 1, 6, or 11. Channel 3 will just overlap with 6 and 1. Even though there are 11 channels, 1, 6, and 11 are the only 3 channels that give you the maximum number of non overlapping channels.

The problem you will encounter the least often is the computer will not work while connected to the router but will work connected directly to the modem. In that case, you just clone your MAC address of one of your computers.

I doubt signal strength will even be an issue in a mobile home.

The thing people don't realize is that another technology is called powerline. Since you are buying a laptop, it will have built in wifi. But just make sure you at least enable a WPA password. Powerline eliminates most security problems found in wireless. Check this out:

I'm having trouble connecting my desktop computer to the internet. The wireless internet works fine, but when I go to plus in the computer through ethernet to the router, it won't work. I've plugged the desktop into the cable modem to see if it was the desktop having troubles, but it worked fine. Please help. How do you connect a desktop computer to a router through ethernet?
i have computer for 9 years .And builded a few of my own.But never use router before..

It suppose to be very easy right. How do you connect a desktop computer to a router through ethernet?
you might have to install the driver for the router so your computer recognizes it. The driver should be on the CD that came along with your router. (also, make sure the router is connected to the modem, and make sure its plugged in the right spots)
    1. Did you configure the router properly? That is provided an IP Address to the router and selected Router with Ethernet connection and not USB?

    2. Are you using a straight cable to connect the router to the Computer and both ends are crimped and connected properly good and firm?

    3. If the Router connections are all provided properly, can you check to see if you can communicate with the router, that is are u able to ping the router? If yes, then your comp's communication with the router is intact.

4.As in any basic steps, ensure that all the settings given the router are correct, and SAVED.

    5. Bring down the Windows Firewall or any other firewall, if any, you have setup.

    6. Finally, reset the router to factory defaults, reconfigure and then check.

Once, you checkout all these points, you should be able to have your Net working in a jiffy,
This is a tough question to answer without actually seeing the way things are hooked up. The good news is that the wireless PC is connecting. That's good because that tells me that the connection between the router and the modem is correct.

Try using a different cable between the modem and the router. Maybe the one that you are using is defective. If that doesn't work check your settings for the network card. Make sure that it is set to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP). Also, clear any DNS or WINS settings that may be set. If, after doing that, you still can't connect, go to a command prompt. You do this by clicking on %26lt;START%26gt; %26lt;RUN%26gt; and them typing in CMD and pressing ENTER. At the command prompt type in the command: IPCONFIG /ALL and then press enter. This will display your courant IP settings such as IP address, Subnet mask, default gateway, etc. You should have an IP address of 192.168.xxx.xxx. The exact address will vary depending on the brand of router that you have but if your system shows your IP address as being 169.xxx.xxx.xxx or 0.0.0.0 then you might have a problem with the network card itself. Try replacing it with a different one. If it is integrated on the motherboard disable it and put in a PCI network card.

I have been working networks since 1989 and hooking up these routers is probably the easiest thing that I've ever had to work with. They practically configure themselves and most of the time if there is a problem it is hardware related.

    Good luck,

How do I run signal to a wireless router, from an ethernet card?

I get my internet stream from my free city wireless provider. The stream enters my computer through a linksys network adapter with three antennas and an amplifier built in. It feeds an internal card. It works really well and I'd like to continue using it, but I want to send it to other computers in my apartment via wireless connection.

I want to use an ethernet card in an adjacent slot to feed a router that will transmit wireless signal across my apartment. For some reason the router will not install when attached to the output of the ethernet card. Should I just use a cross-over cable? Normally you run a ethernet cable from the wall to the router, to all of the computers, but I don't have this 'wall jack' feature in my apartment.

Much obliged. How do I run signal to a wireless router, from an ethernet card?
A couple of things: 1/ Assuming that you are XP, start your network setup wizard on the PC with the wireless and ethernet. Setup this PC as a residential gateway where other computers connect THROUGH you. This will turn on IP routing and DHCP server. 2/ Make sure you setup your firewall settings on this computer properly. 3/You may need a crossover cable. Check your routers specs to see if it is auto sensing on the Internet port. 4/ As just implied, cable to the Internet port on the router, as your PC is towards the Internet from the router's perspective. 5/ the rest of the PC's in your apartment should be default DHCP client with no special config.

P.S. I am sure you can do this with XP pro. Don't know about XP home. If you have home, then check the M$ website to see if it supports routing. I think it does.

Don't forget to run the cd that came with your router, to install the router. I also have a linksys router, and all I had to do, was install it through the cd. We tried to connect to the internet but the router doesn't connect but the modem connects to the internet with no problem. How do you get a Linksys range plus wireless router to connect to the internet?
Did you connect the router to modem?

You probably already know this, but just in case because you didn't specify..

Your internet cable (From the wall, or wherever) must be connected to the modem, which must be connected to the router, which must connect to each of the PCs on the network via cable or wireless.

If that is correct, try re-setting the router (take a toothpick or some such and hold it into the reset button on the router, the really tiny kind. You must hold the button in for at least 30 seconds until the router lights start blinking.)

If this does not work, open up any web browser and in the address bar try typing in ';192.168.1.1'; (or, if that doesnt work, ';192.168.1.2';, without the quotes) and press enter. If it goes through to your router set-up, see if there's an option to set up the router.

If nothing works, call a tech support guy or return the router for a new one and see if that works. How do you get a Linksys range plus wireless router to connect to the internet?
    READ THE MANUAL!

And/or, use the CD that came with it, and let the software thereon auto-configure it for you.

If you don't have a manual, it's on the Linksys web site as a PDF file. The software that's normally on the CD may also be downloadable in a .ZIP file or something.

One of the things you'll want to hunt-down in the manual is how to RESET the router back to factory specs. Once you've done that, the truth is that most routers just start working when you plug them in, without much configuration.

Beyond that, there's far too much to resolving this sort of problem than it's possible for ANYONE to provide here.

    Hope that helps.
I would try reading the manual first. If you still can't fix the problem, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9KWdOLgy

Well to get a good router you need to pay maybe $60-$80 so it can work between rooms. Some good brands are Linksys and Norton. (although my linksys broke down its still an overall good brand) both are sold at stores where you find electronics, ex: Best Buy, Circuit City, and Frys Electronics. (They did not pay me to write this)How much is a Wireless router for the Wii game system?
you can use any wireless router. have a look on ebay for cheap ones
if you find something can you email me because my wifi has not been working!
Go to Google and type in...... linksys wireless router. About 50 bucks would get you a decent one.
The Wii supports Wireless-B networking, but any Wirelesss-G or newer Wireless-N router will work (as long as they're not configured for g- or n-only operation). Expect to pay between US$30 to $50. You can find one at nearly any place that sells computer hardware or networking equipment. Brands to look for are D-Link, Linksys, or Netgear.

How do I recover my wireless connection to my router?

On my laptop, I lost connection to my security-enabled connection from my router. When I tried to reconnect, it just completely disappeared. I do see other people's names and their networks but that's because I live in an apartment building. I still have solid internet connection from my modem and on my desktop computer but can't get any wireless connection. How do I recover my wireless connection to my router?
There's an option in the router to not broadcast the name of the network (the SSID). Normally, you'd set this yourself, but if someone got into your router's admin pages via wireless, they may have changed it as part of their hijacking operation. (Remote administration is EVIL.)

I suggest you log into the admin pages -- if you can -- from your desktop machine and see if that option has been turned off. If it has, you have pirates on board. The following instructions will help get rid of them.

Because routers differ as to details, I can't be specific about how to accomplish these steps, but they're almost all done from within the router's administration web pages. Note: It best to do them from a computer cabled (even just temporarily) to the router rather than wirelessly, especially since wireless administration will be deactivated by step #1.

Generally, to access your router administration pages, hook up a computer directly to the router and enter the router local IP address into a browser address window. See way below for details on finding your router's IP address.

    1. Deactivate wireless access to your router's administration web pages so only a computer connected via an Ethernet cable can reach them. This won鈥檛 affect wireless use of the Internet, just wireless administration of the router. Even if you don鈥檛 want to leave a computer connected via a cable, leave the cable there for when you need it.

    2. Turn off the SSID (network name) broadcast from the router. There's no need to advertise your network's presence. You're not running a hotspot; everyone who should be on your network should know its name.

    3. Change your SSID from the default. Hackers know that routers come with default SSIDs and look for them. Even if the SSID isn't being broadcast, if a hacker knows its name, they can hop on board.

    4. Set up encryption with an encryption key. The longer, the better. WPA (if your network and all your computers can support 802.11G) is better than WEP. WEP is better than nothing. Each of your wireless computers and devices will need this encryption key. Wired computers will not.

    5. Limit access to only the computers you want on the network via MAC filtering. (MAC refers to unique NIC (Network Interface Card) addresses, not Macintosh computers, and not IP addresses.) This isn't a defense against hardcore freeloaders -- it's possible to fake MAC addresses -- but it keeps out casual interlopers.

    6. Change the range of and/or limit the number of automatically assigned IP addresses (DHCP) to reduce the chance of extra users. Again, hackers know what ranges routers come from the factory with. Changing them makes it a little harder to hop on board.

Here how to find your router IP address:

    1. Click on the Start-%26gt;Run button.

    2. In the text box, type

    cmd

    and press Enter.

    3. A black ';DOS box'; will pop up. In it, enter

    ipconfig /all

A bunch of gibberish will fill the box. Next to ';Default Gateway'; an IP address will appear. This is your router's IP address.

That should go far toward hardening your wireless network. How do I recover my wireless connection to my router?

Is it straightforward to install? How to set up a wireless point on a system using wired router/ modem?
It is true that the 'wireless access point' is usable in your case. However they are not easy to find. In fact any wifi router, which are very common in stores, can be used. You would have two choices, one just replace your existing router with the new wifi router, or run a wire from one of the LAN ports of the existing router to the WAN port of the new wifi router. How to set up a wireless point on a system using wired router/ modem?
Yes, this is possible, and fairly straight forward. The hardware that you are looking for is called a wireless access point (WAP). They differ from routers in that they do not assign IP addresses, and they are very easy to setup.

I have been told that this one works well, and has the added benefit of supporting N speeds.

Yes there are many wireless routers for this purpose and fortunaetly not too much expensive ( last week i bought one for just 25 $ 100 m range model : tl- wr340gd) if you are going for 4 port wireless router and mostly they are plug and play. you just need to take a wire having LAN connecters on both ends then plug one side of connecter to ur wired router and other side to ur wireless router then place the adoptor of wireless router in electricity switch and then search for wireless network from your laptop and now you have running wireless internet connection on ur laptop. And before going to purchase any wireless router please keep in mind that how much distance you want to cover bcoz some routers also give you extended range for just few more $$.

Try by resetting the router. hold the reset button down with a paperclip for about 10sec. This will reset you routerHow do I configure a router without connecting to it?
Plug your PC directly in to one of the Ethernet ports on the router. Wired connections don't use the wireless security settings. That will be faster and less painful than resetting the router to the factory defaults as others have suggested.
you can push the ';reset'; button on the back of the router and everything will be set to default and all security will be removed then you can use your default address to access your modem using your wireless card. Eg. 192.168.0.1
You should be able to log into the router without connecting to it using your administrative password. You shouldn't have to be connected to do this.

How many computers can be connected to the Internet using a wireless router?

I have a Comcast provided wireless router at home.

4 of us can surf the net with no problems. However a 5ht and a 6th computer cannot be used to connect to the Internet. Is there an upper limit on how many computers can talk to the Internet when one uses a wireless router? Or is there something we are doing that is not right? How many computers can be connected to the Internet using a wireless router?
Depends on the router. Most wireless routers have a setting for the number of IP addresses that the DHCP server will allow at one time. How many computers can be connected to the Internet using a wireless router?
IT DEPENDS ON THE THE TYPE OF ROUTER AND ALSO HOW MUCH PERSON IS ALLOW ON THAT ROUTER.

254 with the default DHCP settings
    Check with your broadband provider

You might need to get a better router
You should be able to connect all of your computers to the same router. Try turning off one or two of the computers you already know work to see if the 5th and 6th will connect. If they do then yes your router strangely can only handle 4. If it still doesn't work then you are doing something wrong in the inital connection. Good luck!
i belive its 5 for a basic brodband servace, thats what i have.
ideally, it should be able to give you 256 network connections...remember the ip numbers? normally 192.168.XXX.XXX the numbers go from 0 to 256 and the ip is given either by the router or the server, but in a basic router configuration is router.

if you are using the settings that came from factory, your router probably have a a setting that reads something like ';starting IP'; and ';ending IP'; and those are the setting that limit how many pc can be connected to such network at same time.

On the other hand, when you have either DSL or cable, you have a limited amount of BANDWIDTH, which limits the speed of the internet connection to each computer, if you have more than 4 and all of you are downloading something at same time... that could probably be your problem, like noted by the other answers, it also depends on the brand and quality of your router.
    It depends on your service.

    512 kbps -- 4 computers.

    768 kbps -- 6 computers

    1024 kbps -- 10 computers.

    1536 kbps -- 14 computers.

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) must tell you your broadband speed.
Routers have a limit on how many computers they can support. You can either buy more routers or a router that supports connecting more computers to the internet.
Make your DHCP scope in your wireless router as big as you can. Many limit it. The solution is to use a different DHCP server and not the one on the router.
It will depend on the specific model and manufacturer. Do you have a Linksys, Netgear or other wireless router?

For example, some Linksys routers allow 60 connections, while others may only allow 5.
    maybe theres just a limit
Depends on the router. Some only allow 5 people. Some allow up to 64. Plus you can always daisy chain more together to make a larger network.

How far can you be from a wireless router to the psp?

For the psp, how far can you be from the wireless router to the psp to connect to the internet.

What I mean is that the nearest wireless router(the one I know of) is at school(and the wireless router is big) and from my house to it is about 2 miles away. Will it work? How far can you be from a wireless router to the psp?
It depends on ur routers signal; how strong it is. A normal router signal ges up to 60-100 yards. Yes it is possible for some routers to send signals up to 1 mile, check this one out http://www.geek.com/mini-review-parkervi There are prlly more powerful ones. But i dont think that a school would use those kinds of routers. How far can you be from a wireless router to the psp?
It depends on the router your connecting to. The PSP itself does not have a particular radius.

Regular school routers do not have a very big radius, and very few have one of 2 miles. Hell, I don't even know if those exists.
hummmm no, i'm just in another room and i lose connection.
The standard for a home router is about 150 feet. A commercial access point has about a 300 foot signal. It is unlikely that you will be able to connect to a school router form 2 miles away. And if you can, you should not as connecting to someone else's network (especially a commercial one) is a crime that can land you in jail.
Nope. The maximum range for a wireless router is 100 meters under optimal conditions. You're way outside that.
